How Duration Is Calculated
Date-to-Date Duration
The calculator breaks down the time between two dates into:
- Complete years
- Complete months (after accounting for full years)
- Remaining days
- Total days (absolute count)
- Total hours, minutes, seconds
Example: March 15, 2020 to May 5, 2026
- Full years: 6 (March 15, 2020 → March 15, 2026)
- Remaining months: 1 (March 15 → April 15)
- Remaining days: 20 (April 15 → May 5)
- Duration: 6 years, 1 month, 20 days
- Total days: 2,243
- Total hours: 53,832
Time-to-Time Duration
Example: 9:30 AM to 4:45 PM
- From 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM = 7 hours
- From 4:30 PM to 4:45 PM = 15 minutes
- Duration: 7 hours 15 minutes
Overnight Durations
Example: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM
- 10:00 PM to midnight = 2 hours
- Midnight to 6:30 AM = 6 hours 30 minutes
- Duration: 8 hours 30 minutes
Business Days Calculation
For contracts, shipping, and project management, count only weekdays (Monday-Friday):
Example: Business days from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 13
- Calendar days: 12
- Weekend days: June 7-8 (Saturday, Sunday)
- Business days: 10
With holidays: If June 9 is a holiday
- Business days: 9

This gives the absolute number of calendar days, accounting for leap years automatically.
Working Hours in a Period
Working Hours = (Total Days - Weekends - Holidays) × Daily Hours
Example: February 2026 (28 days), 8-hour days

- Working hours: 19 × 8 = 152 hours
Leap Year Impact
Leap years add an extra day (February 29), affecting long-duration calculations:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate duration across months with different lengths?
The calculator handles varying month lengths automatically. From January 31 to February 28 is exactly 28 days (or 29 in a leap year).
What's the difference between elapsed time and effort time?
Elapsed time is total calendar duration. Effort time is actual working hours. A 5-day task with 2 days of waiting has 5 days elapsed but 3 days effort.
How do I exclude weekends from my calculation?
Use the business days mode, which counts only Monday through Friday.
Can I calculate fractional months?
Months vary in length (28-31 days), so fractional months are approximate. The calculator uses the actual calendar days for precision.
How accurate is the duration for legal contracts?
