Measuring Your Foot
Method 1: Tracing
- Place a blank paper on a hard floor
- Stand on it with your full weight
- Trace around your foot with a pencil held vertically
- Measure the longest point (heel to longest toe)
- Measure the widest point (ball of foot)
- Repeat for other foot (they're often different sizes!)
Method 2: Brannock Device
The professional measuring tool found in shoe stores measures:
- Length: Heel to toe
- Width: Narrow (AA) to extra-wide (EEEE)
- Arch length: Heel to ball of foot (important for proper flex point)

International Size Systems Explained
US System
Based on a barley corn unit (1/3 inch). Men's and women's scales differ by approximately 1.5-2 sizes.
UK System
Similar to US but starts from a smaller zero point. UK sizes are approximately 0.5 smaller than US men's and 2 sizes smaller than US women's.
European (EU) System
Based on Paris points (2/3 cm or 6.67 mm). More precise than US/UK systems. Most European brands use this.
Mondopoint
The international ISO standard. Simply the length of the foot in millimeters, optionally with width. Most accurate system but least commonly used in retail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my two feet different sizes?
Very common—up to 60% of people have feet that differ by half a size or more. Always fit shoes to your larger foot and use an insole or thicker sock for the smaller foot.
Should I measure my feet in the morning or evening?
Evening. Feet swell throughout the day and can be up to half a size larger by evening.
How much room should I have in the toe box?
About a thumb's width (½ to ¾ inch) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
What if I'm between sizes?
Size up for running shoes (feet swell during exercise) and boots (room for thick socks). Size down for dress shoes and sandals.
Do shoe sizes change as I age?
Yes. Feet tend to get longer and wider with age as ligaments loosen. Many people gain half a size or more between ages 40 and 70.
