About the Mulch Calculator
Mulch is one of the best investments you can make in your garden. It suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, regulates soil temperature, and adds a polished look to landscaping. But buying too little leaves bare spots, while buying too much wastes money and creates storage headaches. Our mulch calculator tells you exactly how much to order.
What the calculator provides:
- Cubic yards needed for bulk delivery
- Number of bags (2 cu ft or 3 cu ft bags)
- Square footage covered at your chosen depth
- Cost estimate based on mulch type
How to Calculate Mulch Needs
Formula
Volume (cubic feet) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (feet)
Example: Garden bed 15 ft × 8 ft, mulch depth 3 inches
- Area = 15 × 8 = 120 sq ft
- Depth = 3 inches = 0.25 feet
- Volume = 120 × 0.25 = 30 cubic feet
- Cubic yards = 30 ÷ 27 = 1.11 cubic yards
- Bags (2 cu ft): 30 ÷ 2 = 15 bags
Recommended Mulch Depths
| Application | Recommended Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General garden beds | 2-3 inches | Standard for most plants |
| Tree and shrub rings | 3-4 inches | Wider rings (3-6 ft diameter) |
| New beds (weed suppression) | 3-4 inches | First application |
| Refreshing existing mulch | 1-2 inches | Add on top of old mulch |
| Sloped areas | 3-4 inches | Prevent erosion, may need edging |
| Pathways | 2-3 inches | Fine mulch or bark nuggets |
| Playground areas | 6-12 inches | Certified playground mulch for safety |

Types of Mulch
Organic Mulches (Decompose over time, enrich soil)
| Type | Cost per Cu Yd | Best For | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shredded hardwood | $30-50 | General landscaping | Attractive, readily available | Can mat down, acidify soil |
| Pine bark nuggets | $35-55 | Trees, shrubs | Long-lasting, attractive | Float away in rain |
| Cedar mulch | $40-60 | Insect-prone areas | Natural insect repellent | More expensive |
| Cypress mulch | $35-55 | General use | Fine texture, golden color | Environmental concerns |
| Pine straw | $30-45 | Acid-loving plants | Lightweight, natural look | Needs replenishing often |
| Compost | $25-40 | Vegetable gardens | Enriches soil, free if homemade | Decomposes quickly |
| Wood chips | $20-35 | Paths, large areas | Cheap, often free from tree services | Can rob nitrogen initially |
Inorganic Mulches (Long-lasting, don't decompose)
| Type | Cost | Best For | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rubber mulch | $150-300/cu yd | Playgrounds | Extremely durable, safe falls | Expensive, doesn't enrich soil |
| Rock/stone | $50-150/cu yd | Xeriscaping, modern design | Permanent, fire-resistant | Heavy, hard to remove, heats up |
| Landscape fabric + stone | $60-100/cu yd | Weed control | Effective barrier | Fabric can become visible |
Cost Estimation Example
Project: Three garden beds totaling 400 sq ft, 3-inch depth
- Volume: 400 × 0.25 = 100 cubic feet = 3.7 cubic yards
- Bulk option: 4 cubic yards shredded hardwood at $40/cu yd = $160 + delivery
- Bag option: 50 bags (2 cu ft) at $4/bag = $200
- Recommendation: Bulk delivery is cheaper for this size project.
Mulch Application Tips
- Clear weeds first: Mulch suppresses weeds but doesn't kill established ones.
- Don't volcano trees: Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks to prevent rot and pest issues.
- Water before mulching: Moist soil + mulch = better water retention.
- Edge beds: A clean edge prevents mulch from spilling onto lawns.
- Refresh annually: Organic mulches decompose; add 1-2 inches each year.
- Avoid dyed mulch near edibles: Some dyes may not be food-safe.
When to Apply Mulch
- Spring: After soil warms (late April-May in most climates). Locks in spring moisture.
- Fall: After ground cools but before hard frost. Insulates roots through winter.
- Avoid: Applying mulch to frozen ground or on top of snow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a cubic yard of mulch weigh?
Typically 400-800 pounds, depending on type and moisture. Much lighter than gravel or soil.
Is bulk or bagged mulch cheaper?
Bulk is usually cheaper for orders over 2-3 cubic yards. Bagged is more convenient for small projects and easier to transport without a truck.
Can I use too much mulch?
Yes. More than 4 inches can prevent water and air from reaching roots, causing root rot. Never pile mulch against plant stems or tree trunks.
Does mulch attract termites?
Termites are attracted to wood, but they're usually already present in the soil. Cedar and cypress mulches have natural insect-repelling properties. Keep mulch 6-12 inches away from foundations.
How long does mulch last?
Fine shredded mulch: 1-2 years. Bark nuggets: 2-4 years. Stone/rubber: 10+ years.
