About the Conception Calculator

Knowing your conception date helps you understand your pregnancy timeline, estimate your due date if you're unsure, and satisfy curiosity about when your baby was conceived. Our conception calculator works backward from your known date to estimate when conception likely occurred.

Three ways to estimate conception:

  1. From due date: Conception ≈ Due date - 266 days
  2. From last menstrual period (LMP): Conception ≈ LMP + 14 days (in a 28-day cycle)
  3. From ultrasound date: Adjusted based on fetal measurements

How Conception Is Estimated

Method 1: From Due Date

The average human pregnancy lasts 280 days (40 weeks) from LMP, or 266 days (38 weeks) from conception.

Formula: Conception Date = Due Date - 266 days

Example: Due date is December 25, 2026 December 25 - 266 days = April 3, 2026 (approximate conception)

Method 2: From Last Menstrual Period

In a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation (and conception) occurs about 14 days after LMP.

Formula: Conception Window = LMP + 10 to 16 days

Example: LMP was March 15, 2026

  • Conception window: March 25 to March 31, 2026
  • Most likely date: March 29, 2026

For irregular cycles:

  • 21-day cycle: Ovulation around day 7 (LMP + 7 days)
  • 28-day cycle: Ovulation around day 14 (LMP + 14 days)
  • 35-day cycle: Ovulation around day 21 (LMP + 21 days)

Formula for irregular cycles: Ovulation ≈ Cycle Length - 14 days after LMP

Method 3: From Ultrasound

Early ultrasounds (8-12 weeks) are the most accurate for dating:

Ultrasound Finding Gestational Age Estimated Conception
Gestational sac visible 4-5 weeks ~2-3 weeks ago
Fetal pole + heartbeat 6-7 weeks ~4-5 weeks ago
Crown-rump length (CRL) 8-12 weeks ~6-10 weeks ago

Example: Ultrasound on May 15 shows 8 weeks gestation

  • Conception: May 15 - 56 days = March 20, 2026

The Fertile Window

Conception can only occur during a 6-day window each cycle:

Day Relative to Ovulation Fertility Status
5 days before Low probability (sperm can survive up to 5 days)
4 days before Moderate probability
3 days before Good probability
2 days before High probability
1 day before Peak probability
Ovulation day Peak probability (egg lives 12-24 hours)
1 day after Low probability

Best days for conception: The 2 days before ovulation and ovulation day itself.

Factors Affecting Conception Date Accuracy

  1. Cycle irregularity: Irregular cycles make LMP-based estimates less accurate
  2. Late ovulation: Some women ovulate later than day 14 even with regular cycles
  3. Sperm survival: Sperm can live 3-5 days, widening the conception window
  4. Implantation timing: Fertilization occurs 12-24 hours after ovulation; implantation 6-10 days later
  5. Multiple encounters: If intercourse occurred multiple times in the fertile window, pinpointing exact conception is impossible

Conception and Paternity Questions

In cases where conception timing is legally or personally important:

  • DNA testing is the only definitive method for paternity
  • Conception calculators provide estimates with a margin of error
  • If intercourse with different partners occurred within 5 days, conception date alone cannot determine paternity
  • Early ultrasound dating (8-12 weeks) is more accurate than LMP-based estimates

Interesting Conception Facts

  • Twins: Identical twins occur when one fertilized egg splits. Fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized during the same cycle.
  • Conception sex ratio: Slightly more male conceptions occur (about 105-107 males per 100 females), though male fetuses have higher miscarriage rates.
  • Seasonal patterns: Some studies show slight seasonal variations in conception rates, often peaking in winter months in temperate climates.
  • Age and conception: Female fertility peaks in the early to mid-20s and declines after 35. Male fertility declines more gradually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I know the exact date of conception?

Usually not exactly. Even with regular cycles, the conception window spans several days. Ultrasound dating provides the most accurate estimate.

If my due date is calculated from LMP, is conception exactly 266 days before?

Not exactly. The 280-day pregnancy calculation assumes ovulation on day 14 of a 28-day cycle. Actual gestation from conception averages 266 days but varies by 5-10 days.

Can conception occur during my period?

It's unlikely but not impossible, especially with short cycles (21-24 days) where ovulation occurs early.

How accurate is conception dating by ultrasound?

First-trimester ultrasounds (8-12 weeks) are accurate within ±5 days. Second-trimester ultrasounds are accurate within ±10 days.

What's the difference between conception date and implantation date?

Conception (fertilization) occurs in the fallopian tube, usually within 24 hours of ovulation. Implantation (when the embryo attaches to the uterus) occurs 6-10 days after fertilization.
